Across the forestry sector, crews are managing environmental compliance, field observations, mapping, and operational data in remote locations – often using tools that were never designed for the job.
That’s the problem that Land Matters set out to solve.
Their solution, Compliance Matters, is a field-ready digital tool designed specifically for forestry operations – practical, accessible, and built for the realities of work on the ground.
This year, it stood out as the winner of the 2026 Harvesting Micro Innovation Challenge.
What made it compelling wasn’t just the technology. It was the way it was developed – grounded in a real industry need, shaped through collaboration, and strengthened by emerging talent, with a connection to the University of Canterbury School of Forestry.
It reflects something we are seeing more clearly each year: innovation that comes from within the sector – from people who understand the challenges firsthand – that has the greatest potential to deliver impact.
With support from the award from Forest Growers Research, this work will now move into further development and field testing, taking it one step closer to practical application across forestry operations.
The signal from industry is clear. There is a strong appetite for solutions that are simple, effective, and built for the field.
