Forest Growers Research Ltd (FGR) is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Polish software company DEEPLAI LLC to modernise log marking for the New Zealand’s forest industry.
The Automated Log Identification Project (Log ID) is being carried out under the Forestry Work in the Modern Age partnership between FGR and the Ministry for Primary Industries. Led by FGR Harvesting Programme Manager Keith Raymond, the project aims to deliver a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and fully automated log tracking system.
DEEPLAI specialises in developing AI-driven software solutions. Its technology, supported by New Zealand engineering expertise, will enable each log to have a unique tamper-proof mark. Real time geospatial tracking will be used to authenticate provenance and provide traceability across the entire wood supply chain.
New Zealand’s main log ID system for export logs currently is a paper tag imprinted with a barcode or QR code. The tag is stapled to each log by hand, meaning it can sometimes be removed or lost. Ultimately, Log ID will be applied across New Zealand timber harvesting operations. A database will store the log ID and associated information, such as log characteristics, to enable enhanced traceability across the supply chain.
DEEPLAI’s vision for AI-powered workflow automation supports FGR’s goals of digital transformation in forestry. Company founders Swapan Chaudhuri (CEO) and Andrzej Saja (CTO) bring extensive expertise in business and software development to the initiative.
FGR looks forward to a successful deployment of this cutting-edge solution to benefit the entire forestry value chain.
