FGR and NZ forestry companies and manufacturers hosted a group of 20 forestry/contract managers and forestry industry representatives from Japan to visit operations in New Zealand from 10-12 November 2025. The visitors are undertaking a study tour focused on New Zealand’s forestry sector to learn about technology that improves safety and efficiency in harvesting operations.

The visiting group consisted primarily of Japanese forestry managers and logging contractor leaders and timber producers, along with representatives from a wood distribution cooperative and a forestry machinery dealer. The group also included academic and industry association representatives.

On Monday 10 November, the group was hosted by Mr Tim Sandall of Pan Pac Forest Products Ltd around operations in Hawkes Bay.

On Tuesday 12 they visited Waratah NZ Ltd in Tokoroa and later had a presentation by FGR Programme Manager Keith Raymond on the Automation & Robotics PGP programme and by Paul Milliken of Applied Teleoperation Ltd on its range of teleoperated and remote-control products. The group were then welcomed to Scion (Bioeconomy Science Institute) to discuss forest harvesting technology and efficiency projects. Later the group enjoyed a Maori concert and Hangi at the Distinction Hotel, Rotorua.

On Wed 12 November the group was hosted by Pat Geoysinsup from Port Blakely Ltd at CMH Contracting Ltd to view a mechanised felling operation at Kaharoa using a Traction Line winch assist. The group finished their Rotorua visit with a geothermal hangi experience at Hell’s Gate, including a guided tour and a mud bath and spa.

About the North Japan Wood Material Distribution Cooperative:

Mr. Yoshiaki Onodera, Ms. Yumi Tachibana, and Ms. Rio Matsushima, represent the cooperative in planning and sales roles. The North Japan Wood Material Distribution Cooperative is an organisation that coordinates timber production and distribution among its member companies in northern Japan. It supports efficient logistics, quality control, and sustainable forestry management practices.
